Moon Festival Cruise Party -- 2002 (Poster)

Culture Introduction:

On the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar, the moon is round and the Chinese people mark their Moon (or Mid-autumn) Festival. The round shape to a Chinese means family reunion. Therefore the Moon Festival is a holiday for members of a family to get together wherever it is possible. As every Chinese holiday is accompanied by some sort of special food. On the Moon Festival, people eat moon cakes, a kind of cookie with fillings of sugar, fat, sesame, walnut, the yoke of preserved eggs, ham or other material. In Chinese fairy tales, there live on the moon the fairy Chang E, a wood cutter named Wu Gang and a jade rabbit which is Chang E's pet. In the old days, people paid respect to the fairy Chang E and her pet the jade rabbit.

BY CAR...

  • From the north, take Lake Shore Drive (US 41) to the Grand Avenue exit.
  • From the northwest, take the Kennedy Expressway (I-90/94) to the Ohio Street Exit, south on Orleans to Illinois Street and proceed east.
  • From the west, take the Eisenhower Expressway (I-290) to Columbus Drive, north to Illinois Street and proceed east.
  • From the southwest, take the Stevenson Expressway (I-55) to Lake Shore Drive (US 41), north to Illinois Street and proceed east.
  • From the south, take the Dan Ryan Expressway (I-90/94) east to the Stevenson Expressway (I-55) to Lake Shore Drive (US 41), north to Illinois Street and proceed east.
  • From the southeast, take Lake Shore Drive (US 41) north to the Illinois Street exit.

PARKING

Standard Parking operates three on-site parking garages, accommodating 1,740 cars at Navy Pier. Self-park rates (including $1.50 city tax) are:
  • Up to 1 hour $9.50
  • Up to 3 hours $14.50
  • Up to 8 hours $17.50
  • Up to 24 hours $19.50
  • Saturdays: All Day $17.00

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

Public transportation is recommended as the best way of getting to Navy Pier. It makes your visit easy and affordable.

METRA: METRA commuter rail is a convenient travel alternative. And, direct service to Navy Pier is provided by CTA buses from the Madison Street (formerly Northwestern) Station. For details, call (312) 322-6777.

City Bus: The CTA has six bus lines with more than 200 buses that serve Navy Pier's front entrance daily. These include the #29 (State Street), the #65 (Grand Avenue), the #56 (Milwaukee Avenue) and the #66 (Chicago Avenue). For more information, call the CTA at (312) 836-7000.

Navy Pier Free Trolley Service: The Illinois-Grand Corridor Transportation Management Association (TMA) offers FREE daily trolley service between Navy Pier and State Street along Grand Avenue and Illinois Street. Current Trolley hours are Sundays through Thursdays 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.; Fridays and Saturdays 10 a.m. - 1 a.m.

City of Chicago trolleys: The Chicago Department of Transportation provides a number of city trolleys on weekends. The free trolleys currently operate from 10 a.m.- 6 p.m. on Saturdays and 12 p.m. - 6 p.m. on Sundays. Service Runs every 30 minutes. Current trolleys pick-up points include: Metra/Navy Pier; Metra/Museum Campus; and Michigan Avenue.
