Considering the constant need of
temporary housing by people, CSSA is building a Temporary Housing Service
for our community.
People who can use this service:
- new
NU students/scholars (from China/other
states of US/Canada...)
- students/scholars
who visit NU for academic purposes for a short term
- NU
students/scholars who have to move from one place to another but can't find
place to live in between
Regulations:
- Temporary
housing service only covers 1 to 14
days. Beyond that, both lodger and the landlord need to work out their own
plans.
- Temporary
housing service accepts living
room as temporary housing place. The living room can be empty or occupied
by the landlord himself, as long as it can reasonably fit in the lodger. We
categorize living rooms into two groups: a good one (with bed / sofa) and an ok one (no bed & sofa). All
rooms will be sorted based on their conditions. Note that you can provide a bedroom as
the temporary housing place, but it will be treated as a good “living
room”.
- The
lodging fee of temporary housing per day is fixed: $13 for a good one, $10 for an ok one.
- A
living room will be inspected by our housing coordinators to make sure it is
the same as described by the landlord.
- All
money issues will be securely handled by CSSA. The lodgers will pay the full
amount to CSSA when he moves in and CSSA will pay the fee back to the landlord
when the lodger moves out.
- 0.15%
of the lodging fee ($2 out of $13 / $1 out of $10) will be used as the subsidy
for the housing coordinators. 0.1% of the lodging fee ($1 out of $13 / $10)
will be used as funding of CSSA.
The Temporary Housing Service
will be running all year round.
For landlord (temporary housing
providers):
Whenever you feel like to provide
a temporary housing to help people and also make some extra money,
just contact CSSA housing coordinators with your place information
(bed/sofa/none, empty / shared living room, date and days you’re willing to
provide housing, your background and so on). You will be contacted when we match
your information with the requests. And you will be guaranteed to be paid when
the lodging is finished. What you can get:
- $10
per day per lodger for a good living room or $8 per day per lodger for an ok
living room. (e.g. $70 for 7 days for your good living room.)
- Making
new friends with students/scholars
For lodger:
Whenever you need a temporary
housing place, just send your request to CSSA housing coordinators. We'll do our
best based on our available living room information. What you can get:
- Only
$13 / $10 per day for a living room
- Living
in a reliable place (live with students/family, close to the campus)
- Making
new friends
- If
you’re a new student / scholar to NU from countries other than US, you will
get a free 30 minutes phone card from
CSSA to help you find your future long-term place,
For housing coordinator (open
positions):
The position is now open to the public. We
need 1-2 housing coordinators (for both Chicago & Evanston campuses)
What you need to do:
- Receive
temporary housing requests and available living rooms information from people
(usually emails)
- Match
requests with living rooms information.
- Inspect
the living rooms before the lodger moves in (e.g. is there really a
sofa?)
- Gather
feedbacks from the lodger to make sure the landlord provides what he promises.
Note that CSSA has the authority to withhold the payment to the landlord
if he fails to provide what he promises.
What you will get:
- $2
per day per lodger for a good living room or $1 per day per lodger for an ok
living room. (e.g. $28 for 7 days for 2 lodgers living in good living
rooms.)
- make
friends with new people / local people
Workload:
The workload is not heavy, since
on average, there will be around 3 temporary housing requests per month, which
means you will get $90 per quarter as your subsidy on average ($2 * 3 lodgers *
5 days in good living rooms * 3 months).
How to apply for the
positions:
Send your personal information to nucssa2004@yahoo.com
Note:
For potential landlords:
Before we finally decide the
housing coordinators, please send your temporary housing place information to nucssa2004@yahoo.com
For potential lodgers:
Before we finalize the service,
please wait for our further announcement of this service.
This
service only deals with temporary
housing issues.
All
information / requests about leasing / subleasing of normal living places should
still go to our BBS www.cssabbs.org.
Feel free to contact us if you
have any suggestion or idea.
Thanks!

yours,
