The shading algorithm presented here is exploratory, and we expect many improvements are possible.

The most interesting open ended question in automatic illustration is how the rules may change or evolve when illustrating a scene instead of single objects, as well as the practical issues involved in viewing and interacting with 3D technical illustrations.

It may also be possible to improve automatic illustration for specific applications such as architecture and medicine.

We would like to thank Jane Hurd who spoke at the SIGGRAPH 97 Panel entitled: "Medical illustration & visualization: Why do we use CG and does is really make a difference in Creating Meaningful images?" She made the point that computer graphics tools do not incorporate many of the techniques that an artists need.

We would also like to Thank the University of Utah Computer Graphics Groups, Dan Kersten, Susan Ashurst and our sponsors.
