More and more in recent years, we see end-users and service providers jumping on the VSAT bandwagon. Networks
are becoming larger, applications wider, and installations more global. Almost everywhere you go, you see those
tiny dishes on top of gas stations, drugstores, hotels and banks.
By the end of 1998, more than 300,000 interactive VSAT remote terminals will be installed worldwide.
WHY the VSAT Boom?
VSATs provide total independence from the telephone companies. For networks of more than 200 sites carrying
on-line traffic, there could be significant cost savings over terrestrial alternatives. Sites can be installed
and removed easily. A VSAT network anywhere in the world can grow at a rate of 300 to 500 sites per month. The
service quality is superb: 99.9% of the time there is less than 1 error in 1,000,000 characters sent by satellite.
The VSAT remote equipment, already very mature, fails on average once every 10 years. Furthermore, networks are
operated through a Network Management System, providing easy control and monitoring of every single site.
