Psychologists who have studied human perception of 3D shapes observed that humans fail to use much of the information provided, and instead we tend to extract features, such as contours to enhance recognition, disregarding most of the other information.

Many psychologist believe that line drawings convey at least as much information about shape as shaded or textured images.

Instead of debating which of these two computer generated images conveys more shape information, our goal has been to combine the strengths of both of these images, synthesizing shading, highlights and edge lines to create a technique which maximizes the communication of shape information.

This is the goal of conventional illustrations as well.
