Tones vary in hue but don't vary much in luminance.
Here we have an example of a tone scale, created by blending from a green to a same intensity gray.
When a tone scale is applied as shading model, the edge lines and highlights are clearly visible.
However the lack of intensity shift makes it difficult to determine shape details.
