We can now compare a hand-tuned phong-shaded image to an image automatically generated using our technique.

Basically all we have done is to use color instead of white and black to give the 3D depth cue to an image. By using color, the surface that faces away from the light no longer has to be flat-shaded and we don't loose shape details due to the position of the lights or the shading method.

In this example the surface curvature of the small claws in t the 2nd image is no longer lost.

Note that the first image is darker. When the bright regions are made warm, they can be made brighter while still remaining visually distinct from the highlights. This and the cool hue shift allow us to also brighten the dark regions further accenting the edge lines.
