Slide 3 & 4 of 52

We do a lot of geometric design at Utah, and we find that we have to hand-tune most of our images and they still convey shape poorly. Here is an example of a computer generated image and an artistic rendering, both of mechanical parts.

Almost immediately we can tell which image was generated by an artist, as well as which image conveys more information about the shape and function of the object.

Our goal in this paper is to close the information gap between these two images. We would like to be able to automatically generate images like the technical illustration.
