Slide 5 & 6 of 52

In past years, one of the largest goals of computer graphics has been realistic image synthesis.

However in a number of situations, a image which provides more specific information is valued above realism.

For example, an automobile repair manual uses illustrations to remove unnecessary details and to draw attention to specific features.

The illustrator of the image on the second slide, used cut-aways to reveal the details in the dash board, front quarter panel, hood, tire, and grill of the car.

The illustrator also uses color to differentiate parts, such as hoses, and to convey relationships between parts. For instance, it is easier to ask someone to connect the blue hose to the red hose, but hard to explain the same thing with a photograph where all hoses appear black.
